The Rebbe explains that the mitzvah of matanos l’evyonim is about leaving one’s own limitations and thereby connecting to someone else. Thereby giving someone who feels separated and lonely a sense of belonging and self-worth.

This year more alumni than ever before have reached out to me for help. A chosson with mounting expenses; a shliach with a large family ka”h; a young man with children who is finishing up schooling for a career, a chosid who is working but just can’t make ends meet. The common denominator is that as balei teshuva each of them feel a certain sense of disconnectedness, alone, even a little bit helpless.

Our job this Purim is to make each of them feel part of a larger family, part of our family, part of the family of chasidim and of Yidden.
